The Publishing House Bed & Breakfast

Sometimes…you just need a break. My dedicated, darling husband has had a crazy couple of months; he started an exciting, yet demanding, new job while simultaneously taking care of me after major surgery. He’s worked 10- to 12-hour days for two weeks straight – that’s including weekends, my friends. Woosh and ugh: it’s been a lot. To say that he was stressed and exhausted by the end of July is an understatement.

I scrambled to schedule a Michigan mini-vacation for August, but I knew Bryan needed a pick-me-up sooner rather than later; and the universe offered a solution. I’d had the good fortune to tour the brand new Publishing House Bed & Breakfast through my freelance gig with Soirée Weddings & Events earlier last week; so when they ran an amazing one-night-only-and-that-night-is-tonight Facebook special, I jumped head first!

Owners Kimberly and Shawn have created something very unique here: a refined mixture of high-end bed and breakfast and a tony boutique hotel. It’s a little pocket of industrial, mid-century chic heaven. There are 11 gorgeously appointed en suite guest rooms, as well as stylish shared spaces that include a living area, dining room, and cozy library.  In Chicago’s trendy West Loop neighborhood, it’s just steps away from some of the best restaurants and bars in the city.

Everleigh Room

Oh, hello, lovely Everleigh Room! Someone else’s last minute cancellation became our good fortune. Everleigh is the room suggested as a bridal suite because of its extra large size and posh amenities (wait until you see the bathroom…oy).

Can I just say, I’m obsessed with this bathroom? OB.SESSED. That brass light fixture, the pink clawfoot tub, and the sassy art piece: swoon! The design and attention to detail is magnificent. See that shower over there? It has multiple shower heads, a bench, and a steam shower function. Yeah, I was pretty much a prune by the time we left the next day.

Publishing.House.Dining

Every morning a breakfast buffet is set up on that adorable green sideboard with cereal, muffins/pastries, fruit, and juice. Guests get their own French press of coffee and choice of hot breakfast entrees. We devoured cooked-to-order omelettes and breakfast burritos the morning after we stayed. Kimberly also brought out an extra treat of soft, doughy pastries filled with Shawn’s homemade jam, which I believe were hamantaschen. Everything was delicious, and we enjoyed chatting with another couple, also on staycation for their anniversary.

The lounge area features a baby grand piano, soon-to-be working wood-burning fireplace, and a breakfast bar with views into the kitchen. There were several guests unwinding in this area the night we stayed: relaxation station.

See? Angus gets it.

With the coming additions of Solo Salon and swanky wine bar The Press Room, Publishing House is only going to get better. So, next time you’re in Chicago – or if you’re local and need a retreat – definitely check out Publishing House B&B. Angus awaits you….

  1. This IS a great place! Would love to stay there — it’s decorated beautifully! Thanks for following our blog, Oh, the Places We See. We love going to new places and staying in something other than the national chain hotels. Best wishes for more great posts to come.
